25 Gresham Street sits behind the remains of St John Zachary's Church, which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The church yard is treated as a sunken garden adjacent to the main entrance. The plan of the building is a 'U' shape. Visitors are protected from the elements - en route to the entrance - by the upper floors of the arms of the 'U' which are suspended over the access. This support appears to derive from four huge raking structural ties that run down from the top of the building to pin joints at the edge of the first floor slab. This also gives the initial impression that an atrium runs right through the building, when in fact only a shallow space, housing the lifts, is present. Ten floors of column free space are provided above ground, with one main, centrally located core.
