Brad Lochore House and Studio

This incongruous extension to artist Brad Lochore's existing house on Old Nichol Street, is easy to miss. Restrained and modest, it fits into its context almost too well. The existing house is an old three-storey workshop. The street elevation has three bays, with large steel window frames, a door and a simple dentil brick cornice. The new extension is zipped onto the old. Austere in appearance, it is devoid of decoration, but seems to capture the essence of its neighbour. On the ground floor, new, welcoming, timber doors divulge clues about access, especially the new large opening leading into the studio. The ground floor extends back some way beyond the rear building line, filling the site, and is given over to studio space. This is lit from above via a large area of roof lights. A further, two-storey extension at the rear of the existing house, invisible from the street, completes the composition.
