John Pawson's flagship store for fashion retailer Jigsaw, just off Oxford Street, is perhaps his most central and accessible London project. Converted from a former photographic shop, the accommodation, including offices, is spread over several floors and includes the basement, although public access is limited to the lower two levels. Pawson added the double height shopfront -cutting back the first floor- and gutted the interior. It is all executed in his inimitable style. The floors are grey granite slabs, which are lifted from blandness by having narrow stainless steel strips inserted into every joint. Intriguingly, the majority of the clothes cannot be clearly seen from the street -they are shrouded from view by sheets of etched acrylic spanning from floor to ceiling- which break the interior into distinct bays. Overall it is a cool and sophisticated interior for its time, that has had widespread influence.
