Kingsdale School
In the next decade 'Building Schools for the Future', a British governmental programme, aims to see every secondary school in the country refurbished or replaced. In practice this means the biggest demolition wave of educational buildings ever seen in the UK. But this is by no means inevitable. There is always the option to refurbish and Kingsdale School in South London is living proof that it can work. After the successful completion of Phase 1, which involved reconfiguration of the central courtyard, the school needed a new music and sports block. The new sports block, a building type which usually ends up as a big box owing to the dictates of Sport England, has been turned into a Venturian Decorated Shed with a stunningly twisted roof. The music building has a perforated envelope with kidney-shaped openings that are covered by glass bubbles which turn out to be standard domed roof lights, unexpectedly applied to a vertical rather than a horizontal surface.
