The Lisson Gallery is one of Britain’s most exciting and interesting private art galleries, with international emerging artists showing their work in the New Space, carefully designed by London based architect Tony Fretton. A subtle L-shaped space, built in two phases, combines two distinct galleries, each with its own street-front and entrance – one at Bell Steet, the other at Lisson Street. Over time this arrangement has been lost, and the exhibition spaces have grown to become a single building, with the Bell Street front as its main icon. The different exhibition spaces are connected at the first floor. The types of spaces, vary in light and height, and thus gives the gallery the opportunity to accommodate their changing programme accordingly. Art that suits the space, and the other way round.
