This bridge was commissioned to provide a strategic pedestrian link across the dock, which was originally built between 1850 and 1855 and is 1.5km long. As part of the renaissance of London's docklands, the Royal Victoria Dock was designated as a centre for sailing and rowing. Therefore any bridge had to provide the necessary clearance for recreational sailing vessels to pass underneath. This design (a competition win in 1996) was originally intended to be a transporter bridge, featuring a gondola - or moving platform, slung beneath the main deck, but to date this has not been installed. Pedestrians can alternatively use lifts or stairs to reach the main deck, which sits 15 metres above the water. The main span is 130m long and is designed as a cable-stayed fink truss.
