The Luna Building is an eight-storey residential structure sitting on the South bank of the Thames, just down river from Tower Bridge. Once part of the busy docks, many of the original warehouses in this area were destroyed in WW2. Soulless replacements were built in the 1950s and 60s, but they, in turn, fell into disuse. As part of a regeneration programme for Berkeley Homes, GHA has inserted 47 one and two bedroom apartments - including some duplexes - into this new development. Whilst contemporary, the scheme echoes the density and character of the original dock structures. The building has been set back four metres from the river to accommodate a continuation of the riverside walk when future developments permit. The ground floor is set aside for commercial use. Externally, high quality acid-etched precast concrete is used as cladding, alternating with vertical stacks of glazing. On the north elevation, balconies looking towards the Thames enhance the living experience.
