Tower Environs
This scheme is for a public space that runs north-south from Tower Hill, down to the River Thames, between Foster's Tower Place and The Tower of London. Being adjacent to a spot that attracts thousands of tourists every day, it is a magnet for souvenir and fast food vendors. It would have been easy to just let them all set up shop in any kind of standard structure and let economic forces create a tacky jumble. Fortunately, the authorities realised that The Tower was too important a site to allow that to happen. Instead they let Stanton Williams produce a scheme that integrates all the various functions needed in a dignified and visually unified manner. Ticket booths, fast food outlets and souvenir shops are housed in an elegant family of buildings. Paving and street furniture are of a high quality - most of the latter being custom designed. A noble scheme that is truly world class and worthy of its location
