Western Morning News Headquarters
The Western Morning News is a newspaper serving the south-west of England. Its headquarters nestles on a sloping site, the contours of which helped, so the architects claim, to shape the footprint of the building, which is like a ship. The large printing hall, at the rear, forms the hull, whilst the editorial offices, arranged in a three-sided ring around a three-storey atrium, form the bow. To the eye the building resembles an aircraft carrier, with the roof as the flight deck. This imagery is further reinforced by the board room; cantilevered from an off-set tower. At regular intervals around the building, curved external steel columns (known as tusks) grow out of the ground, and rise to meet the roof beams. Outriggers reach from the columns to support the planar glazed walls, assisted by stainless steel rigging. The concave shape of the walls helps to reduce solar gain in summer.
