The Environment and Education Centre forms the entry point to a bird sanctuary, located between the towns of Purfleet and Rainham. Visitors in weatherproof clothing stand outside the building, focusing large telescopes and cameras with powerful lenses at rare species of birds. In the past guns were fired here, during shooting exercises by the Ministry of Defence. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who now owns the land, commissioned a gateway building for this reclaimed piece of nature. Although the plot is situated in the middle of the marshes, with quite industrial surroundings, the building shows itself optimistic. A rectangular cantilevering first floor, clad in multi-coloured timber, accommodates the cafe and education spaces, and its large range of windows form an eye onto the landscape. Below on the ground floor are offices and a shop. The centre is seen as a flagship project which will have a positive wake-up effect nationally.
