Flamingo
Located in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Calder's Flamingo stands in striking contrast to the black grid of the Mies van der Rohe buildings that surround it. The stabile weighs in at nearly 50 tons and is painted in vermilion, which has since been come to be known as 'Calder Red'. It is the first work to be commissioned under the federal Percent for Art program, which allocates a percentage of a project's budget to public art. Just to the West of the sculpture, a smaller maquette can be seen in the post office building.
