Crystal Cathedral
Affiliated with the Reformed Church in America, the Crystal Cathedral is one of the first mega-churches to appear in the United States. The structure of the building is almost entirely made of space trusses which is used to support nearly 10.000 panes of glass and also serves to diffuse the light entering the building. Due to an increased threat of earthquakes in the region, the glass is affixed to the structure by a silicon glue, rather than by bolts. It is said that it could withstand an 8.0 earthquake. On the northeast side, huge doors (along with operable windows throughout) open daily to allow wind to cool the building. Criticized at the time of opening for offering a view of parked cars, Johnson replied that as people live in their cars all day long why should they be ashamed of them, and asked, "Is God not in the car?".
