As a result of a competition between John Raskob (General Motors) and Walter Chrysler (Chrysler Corporation) to build the tallest building in the world, the Empire State Building was constructed. The construction of the 381m high tower began on januari 22nd 1930 and finished on may 1st 1931; long before the planned finish date. For a long period, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. In 1971 this title was taken by the Twin Towers of the World Trace Center. Though, ever since the destruction of the WTC due to the terrorist attacks on september 11th 2001, the Empire State Building is once again the tallest building in New York.
