San Jose City Hall
In a city dominated by advanced technology, it's fitting that San Jose would build a high-tech city plaza expressing openness and transparency. A large public plaza provides ample room for large events, and is dominated by a 108-foot glass rotunda, that serves as both entry and as an internal gathering space. The rotunda is reminiscent of traditional domes of civic buildings, despite its contemporary form and materials. As with most Meier projects, special attention was paid to how natural light interacts with the building. Elevator cores were moved to the outside of the buildings, allowing an 'ultra-thin' building profile and natural lighting throughout. Many systems are combined to cool the building, including an adjustable bris-soleil system of shading as well as a dozen 20-foot-tall poles that spray a fine mist across the courtyard and into the rotunda to cool it.
