The most dominant feature of the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library system is a large swooping wooden roof that multitasks like no other. Composed of 13 species of grass, the sod roof is punctuated by skylights and solar panels. Anemometers gather wind data, and are used in an abstract display in the entry foyer. A periscope and observation deck invite visitors to engage in the green roof's ecology above the street. The furniture is also of interest. Designed by BCJ as well, the modules are made of 4x8 sheets of maple plywood and assembled without fasteners.
