Tempe Center for the Arts
The angular shed roofs of the TCA provide a unique iconic structure and fold over themselves in a manner reminiscent of the nearby Camelback and Papago mountains. It was designed as a communal home for nine local arts groups, along with a venue for weddings, meetings, festivals, and other public and private events. Due to its close proximity to Phoenix Airport (2 miles) and with the flight path directly overhead, the Center is constructed using a 'box within a box' system, to prevent unwanted noises from penetrating the quiet recesses of the theatre. The base of the steel columns sit on laminated rubber-and-steel-plate bearing pads, allowing the transfer of gravity loads but mitigating the transfer of lateral loads induced by airborne vibration.
