In the new Tabaksteeg residential district this multi-purpose centre is intended to house childcare facilities (kindergarten, after school care centre and crèche), one state and one Protestant primary school, a sports hall, fitness centre, a library and a citizen' s advice bureau. Tobacco cultivation brought short-lived prosperity to this area in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tobacco fields, with little woods of elder and lime trees in between, surround the huge drying barns. Early on in the planning process the advantages of a complex which united various functions under the same roof, thereby offering additional services, were recognised. The old tobacco silos, with their large dark roofs, and the traditional farmstead in which farmers and their families would live together with the horses and other animals under the same roof, were the inspiration for the design. Everyone has their own place in the communal interior. There would be individual living space and access for everyone.
