Architecture trip to Hamburg

MIMOA is organising a 4 day architectural-visit to Hamburg, from Thursday 18 – Sunday 21 November 2010, together with the The Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA). At MIMOA we do not only love to visit buildings in real life, we also love to see building sites! So, we could not go to Hamburg without visiting the construction site of the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s newest iconic landmark. And, yes, this is possible!

Elbphilharmonie?

Here’s a few images to freshen up your memory. Herzog and de Meuron designed and rebuilt a pre-existing brick warehouse topped by a new crystalline tent-like structure. Still in construction, the new concert house is located on the Elbe River in Hamburg, and comprises of three concert halls, one hotel, 45 apartments and the Plaza – a public square elevated 37m above the river, affording 360° panoramic views of the city.

Current construction phase
Having commenced construction in 2007, currently the solid and dominating Kaispeicher, or warehouse base, has been visibly regenerated while the delivery of the new glazed upper levels is now under way. Even now, during construction, the Elbphilharmonie is attracting worldwide attention. During construction, it is possible to visit the site and see the work-in-progress as the building grows. These tours are often fully booked, months in advance. This visitors’ huge response is an indication of the fascination and enthusiasm the Hamburg Philharmonic Hall is conjuring up, far beyond the city of Hamburg as well.
