MIMOA Layar User review by Ryan Taube

MIMOA Layar in Chicago

MIMOA member Ryan Taube has send us some feedback on the MIMOA Layar.

" Hi Naomi / Mieke,
Just wanted to share a photo with you that I took a couple of weeks ago while I was in Chicago. That city is much more pedestrian friendly for an architecture tourist than Los Angeles is, so I was able to have some fun with the Layar app on the iPhone.
The compass was a little off sometimes, so it’s not always perfect, but it’s a great application to see what is around you, and I imagine that it’s even better when a city has more catalogued buildings like you have in the Netherlands.
The photo that I’ve attached is taken from inside of the
Art Insitute of Chicago (Modern Wing) by Renzo Piano and is looking towards the Jay Pritzker Pavilion by Frank Gehry.

Thanks again for a great addition to Mimoa!

MIMOA Layar featured in Guardian video report

Author: Naomi, Posted: December 13th, 2009

The MIMOA Layar is tested and explained by
Guardian reporter Benji Lanyado. He is walking through London testing the latest apps for gadget-loving travellers, and explores his home city through the eye of his iPhone. Great report, showing some latest apps, and their possibilities. With the Unlike Layar, he finds himself a good cup of coffee, and the MIMOA Layar leads him to the Bridge of Aspiration, which he never even noticed before.

Benji concludes: "We’ve had a little play around with AR today. And it’s definitely got it’s limitations, you don’t want to be walking around everywhere like that [he's holing up his phone in front of him]. And certain things don’t lock on, and some of the loading time are quite sluggish. But in terms of finding things around you, that you didn’t know about, and learning about them on the spot, that’s really quite interesting. I think we are definitely going to hear a lot more about AR in the future."

Great to see a non-architect-traveller using MIMOA to unveal the architecture near him. Thanks Benji, for featuring MIMOA.

If you liked what you saw in Benji Lanyado’s video, here’s where to get the apps for yourself.

MIMOA Layar is here!

Author: Naomi, Posted: November 10th, 2009

Dear Android and iPhone 3GS users

We are proud to announce the availability of a MIMOA content layer for the fascinating augmented reality application Layar. Download Layar at the Android Market, the App Store or with iTunes right now, select the MIMOA layer and enjoy an «Architecture Enriched Reality».

Layar is a free application on your mobile phone which shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of reality, through the camera of your mobile phone. It
is a new kind of browser for smartphones. The camera view is overlayed by online information of the MIMOA website.
By holding the phone in front of you like a camera, you can see all information of architecture around you. For all points of interest which are displayed on the screen, information about the building is shown at the bottom of the screen. You can see how far away the building is located and where to go. A perfect travel mate!

For this complex functionality the supported devices not only need to have a camera, GPS sensor and internet connectivity, furthermore a compass and an accelerometer are necessary. For this reason only Android driven smartphones and the iPhone 3GS are supported by Layar right now. (Older iPhone models don’t have an integrated compass).

Some of you might be thinking: "and what about the ‘real’ MIMOA iPhone app?"
Well, no news about that yet. We do have this product high on our list, but we’re still searching for a launching sponsor, who will help us with the primary investment to develop the application. Since we do not have the resources to build it right now, we have to find other ways to finance it. We already talked to many parties, but no result yet. So, the request to you is still open: if you know anyone working with a company or brand, that fits this description, and might be interested to sponsor the MIMOA iPhone app, please let us know, and help us get in contact.
