Author: Mieke, Posted: December 16th, 2011

ACFx Conference 2012
International Summit – Architecture Corporate Foresight Conference

On 2nd February 2012 the first ever Architecture Corporate Foresight conference (short: ACFx), is scheduled to take place, with high-profile contributors, in the mountains above Ischgl.
Members of the elite fields of architecture, communication and design are set to meet at this ACFx conference, where trends and developments, and the impact of the digital world and the world of media will be discussed. This conference will provide a platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of technology and ideas, and can hence be classed as unique. Renowned speakers have
been contacted, many of whom have already confirmed their participation. These include: Bjarke Ingels, founder of the BIG Group; Lidweij Edelkoort, world-famous trend researcher, Assaf Biderman, Associated Director of the SENSEable City Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Jürgen Mayer H., Jürgen Mayer H. architects; Dr. Alexander Rieck from the Fraunhofer Institute IAO; Steve Rogers, EMEA Director at Google, and Sebastian Raßmann from Trendone.
See here the list of all speakers  at ACFx.

In a galaxy far, far, away……NO! The future is NOW!
Our world is fast-paced. Much – including architecture – is changing with breath-taking speed, and rarely do we anticipate in which direction trends and developments will turn. This first  ACFx conference offers an opportunity to profit from the knowledge and work of experts and eminent authorities, to talk with them and look to the future together. A wide range of subjects will be covered
by this conference: from megacities and trend research to start-up ideas and future home, life and work trends. Furthermore, the conference aims to show how the internet and the digital world can be put to optimal use and integrated into strategies. To date, these channels have rarely been made use of in architecture, even though they open up a whole realm of possibilities.

There will be 4 panel discussions held, with the following topics:
– Urban environment : Big, bigger, megacity!
– Trend research: Minds of tomorrow
– Start ups: Creative, sexy, intelligent
– Temporary Corporate Space: future working & living

The conference invites participants to discover more about architectural trends and urban developments, and about new ideas and the potential of the digital world. To find out more about the individual speakers, the programme and event partners or to register,

Go West exhibition: Allmetropolis

Author: Mieke, Posted: December 7th, 2011

Allmetropolis: learning from China’s new megacities.
What would happen if Europe created a Special Economic Zones following the Chinese model? That is the central theme of Allmetropolis, an exhibition presented by Go West Project during the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Biennale of Architecture, that opens Thursday 8 December.

To discover what Europe could learn from the China’s model for urban growth, Go West Project will compare two regions that started their urban growth at the end of the 1970s: one, Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in China, the other, the manmade island of Flevoland in the Netherlands. Both are located in a river delta in the hinterland of an international metropolis, respectively Hong Kong and the Randstad conurbation with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

In the exhibition Allmetropolis, Go West Project compares policy, economy, residential areas and future plans of the two regions. It then poses the question what would happen if Flevoland would implement China’s successful model for growth, meaning it would transform itself into a Special Economic Zone with preferential tax policies compared to the surrounding area, less strict rules for migration and the development of heavy infrastructure.

This research project addresses consequences of current international developments where Europe is increasingly looking at China for financial help to solve the debt crisis. When Europe wants to attract Chinese investors, it’s not more than logical to have a close look at Chinese models for investment and growth.

In September, architect Daan Roggeveen and journalist Michiel Hulshof of the Go West Project published their book How the City Moved to Mr Sun about developing megacities in the heart of China. With their new project Allmetropolis they want to start a discussion about the question what Europe could learn from China’s growth

Venue: B10, OCT, Nanshan, Shenzhen
Exhibition from 8 December 2011 – 18 February 2012

How the City Moved to Mr. Sun – China’s new megacities

Author: Mieke, Posted: June 27th, 2011

How the city moved to Mr. Sun
Go West Project research leads to book about China’s new megacities

SHANGHAI – ‘How the City Moved to Mr. Sun’ is the titel of the new book of the Go West Project, a multidisciplinary research lab focusing on the development of China’s emerging megacities, started by China correspondent Michiel Hulshof and architect Daan Roggeveen.

During two years of research, the Go West Project visited unexplored megacities like Wuhan, Zhengzhou or Chongqing, that are transforming at breakneck pace into huge metropolises with many millions of inhabitants. In size they rival global cities like Rio de Janeiro, London and Moscow, but their names are unknown in the rest of the world.

In ‘How the City moved to Mr. Sun’ they lift the veil from these unexplored megacities in the heart of China. The book presents in detail the mass of humanity washed up in this unstoppable process: farmers who demolish their homes and build their own high-rise apartment blocks, torn down again by city authorities in the name of progress. Architects, complaining that the cities grow faster than they can design them. Chinese officials, surprisingly frank about the darker sides to this story of success.

Highly readable, full of insightful analysis and deeply human stories of modern city life, this book challenges assumptions about the nature of Chinese society, and asks the question: can China transform its triumph of brick and concrete into a model that will conquer the world?

‘How the City Moved to Mr. Sun’ will be published in September 2011, but can be pre-ordered at a discount until July 31, 2011.

World Class Cities 2011

Author: Mieke, Posted: April 3rd, 2011

NOTE: Due to the recently announced Turkish national elections, the organization of World Class Cities has decided to postpone World Class Cities 2011 to the new dates of 12-13 October, 2011!

For the first time in history more people are now living in cities than in the countryside. With this trend set to accelerate in the next decade, urban environments face growing pressure on their existing assets and to deliver new and improved infrastructure for both citizens and commerce.

World Class Cites – 12-13 October, 2011, will bring together the key stakeholders working to improve the built urban environment through better management, design, engineering construction and maintenance so as to improve the liveability of cities and ensure long-term sustainable development and growth.

World Class Cities is the industry event for 2011 where you can network with mayors, local government decision makers and key clients about how they plan to transform their urban environments into more sustainable and liveable cities for the future.
