Antwerp: dense with modernist masterpieces

Home to Europe’s second largest port, the city of Antwerp is also Belgium’s second largest urban area. It relishes in its relationship with the river Schelde, and is experiencing the effervescence of important urban renewal operations. In the area of the old docks (‘t Eilandje) landmarks such as the Neutlings-Riedijk’s MAS (Museum aan de Stroom), housing developments by Diener & Diener and the new Port House by Zaha Hadid have changed the city’s skyline and lifestyle for perpetuity.

Besides recent harbour reconversions, Antwerp is dense with modernist masterpieces, such as the Maison Guiette by Le Corbusier, or the many social housing experiments by Renaat Braem, who also designed the breath-taking Middelheim Pavillion. Our urban walks and tours focus also on the city’s urban development waves, contextualising the many inspiring designs that enrich the city’s urban fabric. From new parks to important institutions such as the Court of Justice, Antwerp’s architecture has benefitted from an inspiring urban planning framework set up by Secchi-Viganò Studio, who are also the authors of the Antwerp Theatre Square.
