Milan: most important laboratory of modern architecture in Italy
Milan, the main city of northern Italy and one of the most populous metropolitan areas in Europe, is the most important laboratory of modern and contemporary architecture in Italy.
In the early decades of the 20th century Milan became an important pole for the Italian and international architectural culture, ideal location for the modern architecture of Gio Ponti, Pagano, BBPR and Giuseppe Terragni (Casa Rustici). Between the 50s and 70s the architectural experimentation (Velasca tower, Pirelli tower) leads to the identification of a "Milanese Style" developed by Caccia Dominioni, Mangiarotti and Albini that were the pioneers of the Design, of which Milan is still today one of the world capitals.
Today the city is experiencing an extraordinary period of activities through the projects of the most important international architects, such as Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Daniel Libeskind, Cesar Pelli, Stefano Boeri, Cino Zucchi. The new districts of Porta Nuova and CityLife are preparing the city for the big event of the Expo Milano 2015.
