Thomas C. Howard

location Weil am Rhein
function auditorium, exposition space, pavilion

The Charter-Sphere Dome, which was erected in 1954 in Detroit, has been transferred to the Vitra Campus at Weil am Rhein in 2000. The Charter-Sphere dome is Thomas C. Howard's signature design. TC Howard started using the Charter-Sphere dome as the request became more demanding. Charter-Spheres are easier to design and erect than the geodesic domes. They are still abundantly seen around the world. TC Howard designed most of the early geodesic domes that are thought to be Buckminster Fuller's. The dome at the Vitra Campus is constructed as a lightweight structure with a membrane cover and is currently used as a space for events by the Vitra company.

Katrina Howard Fairley says:
This dome at the Vitra Campus is not a geodesic dome. And it certainly is not a Buckminster Fuller design. I believe this is a Charter-Sphere dome designed by Thomas C. Howard of Synergetics, Inc and sold by Charter Industries, Inc in Raleigh, NC. This dome is not from 1954. 1954 is when Buckminster Fuller patented the geodesic dome ( all greater circles) Charter-Spheres are easier to erect than geodesic domes . They are based on lesser circles, thus the horizontal rings. Thomas C. Howard is both an architect and an engineer.
He designed most of the famous geodesic domes around the world. The Charter-Spheres he designed mainly for trade shows, fairs and exhibitions. They were not meant to be permanent structures, thus the tents. They had a 20 warranty. The tent manufacturer is out of business. - TC's daughter
