In 2007 the municipality of Amsterdam East decided to demolish a firm block. This radical operation was needed in order to transform the bad functioning square. The building has an underground parking garage in order to lower the parking density at the square and surrounding streets. Rebuilding also brought the opportunity to offer more diversity in housing, such as care-adjusted houses. Furthermore, facilities have been added on ground floor to emphasize the central position.
The apartments are grouped around courtyards. Here, residents can meet and form a small community. All entrances and outdoor spaces of the apartments are orientated towards the courtyards and add to the intimate atmosphere.
Two of the entrance gates have huge pieces of artwork, made of old doors from the demolished building.
