The Stedelijk Museum is internationally known and renowned for its collection of contemporary art. However, before the renovation and addition of a new wing, the building was outdated. The prime location at the Museumplein created an opportunity to extend the museum and give it a new entrance. The new extension, designed by Benthem Crouwel architects, does not ask for more of the same, but to supplement by variety and by adding new opportunities for exhibitions. The old remains and forms a unity with the new. Though from the outside, contrast sets the tone, from the inside you barely notice the bridge between old and new. When you enter the new entrance, the facade of the 1895 museum is exposed in a whole new way. Petra Blaisse, principal of Inside Outside, was commissioned to create an artwork of textile, with architectural scale. The carpet, fabricated by Desso, rises 14 meters to the top of the entrance hall.
