RF Building and Porters Lodge
The RF Building was a multifunctional building for the Strijp R area of the Philips factory, containing garages for transport vehicles, offices, locker rooms and sleeping facilities. One of the entrances to the terrain was located next to this building, so a porter's lodge was needed at the corner of the building as well. When the area was redeveloped, many of the former industrial buildings were demolished for housing. The rear side of the RF building was demolished, after which a weird, yet stunning carcass remained. Piet Hein Eek was inspired by the sudden openness of the garages and decided to redesign the complex and transform the whole building into apartments. By splitting the building and varying the extension of the rear facade, homes will be created with enough light, using the already existing quality of the industrial heritage.
