The centre of the city of Zeewolde consists of a square with stores along an arcade. To distinguish the library from the shops as a public building, the arcade has been deepened from two into five meters. The ground flour is filled with bookcases that are placed in between tripod columns. The upper floor hosts the study- and lecture rooms, which are connected to a roof terrace. You can see the study room from the ground floor because the study room’s floor is lowered through the ceiling of the ground floor. The building has a façade made of brute pure materials that look heavy. It is placed above a strip of glass, which leads to appearance that the heavy façade is floating. The library in Zeewolde was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 1990.
