Edinburgh has acquired another sculptural landmark. The new Air Traffic Control Tower at Edinburgh Airport impresses because of its height (57 m.) and its location - on the main forecourt access road. For REID Architecture, efficient use of space and budget was the main reason for choosing a sculptural form. To overcome the limitations imposed by the small site and the safety requirements, the base and the tower are contained in a single figure with a powerful presence. The compact plan, with central circulation core, also removed the need for additional safety stairs because the length of the escape routes (to the core) is minimal throughout the building. Another advantage of such a building is a reduction in the number of details that have to be designed. The whole building is clad in diamond-shaped zinc plates attached in a continuous pattern. Also integral to the design are the drainage channels which form a double helix pattern across the face of the tower.
